Where all things Dutch come together
Time to celebrate! Oranjehof will open its doors for the very first time on Saturday 18 November 2017, in Foxton. Have a look at our Prospectus.
After many years of hard work and fundraising, our Dutch Connection Centre will be the place where all things Dutch come together - next to De Molen, a replica 17th century lifesize working windmill. We will tell the story of the Dutch in this country, in a real-life storybook that showcases our immigration experience.
We are working on a new website, that will be launched in a few months time. In the mean time, this current website will be the placeholder for Oranjehof. You can find a lot of old and some new information here.
Have a look around if you want to see what we've been doing. And please come back in a few months time for the latest and greatest.
We need financial contributions. Please give? Registered charitable trust: #11088.
A Place with Plenty of Character
The historic township of Foxton - Te Awahou is uniquely placed to become one of the great tourism centres along State Highway 1. It has plenty of classical buildings that remind visitors of its past glory days as a flax processing and bustling harbour town.
Foxton boasts one of the widest Main Streets in New Zealand, complete with vintage trolley buses and a horse drawn tram. De Molen proudly raises its sails above the town. And it probably has more museums per head of population than any other NZ town. Foxton is set to become one of our country's iconic destinations for visitors and international travellers alike.
The township is changing its future. And the Te Awahou - Nieuwe Stroom trust reflects the fantastic community spirit that's very much alive in Foxton, with many different parties partnering up to achieve common goals and share a world class facility.
Facilities - Quick Tour
SORT Kiosk
The Save Our River Trust is cleaning up the river loop, removing invasive weeds and tonnes of silt. It is also opening new walkways throughout the area. A Wetlands Kiosk is planned to provide visitors with information about the river and wetlands area. The area has United Nations Ramsar status, and is one of the most important wetlands areas in New Zealand. Some 93 species of birds call it home.
The Dutch Connection
This museum and cultural centre tells the story of the Dutch in New Zealand – from Abel Tasman’s first encounter with the Maori to today. We’ll connect you with a touch of Dutch - the very best in art, science, tastes and culture that’s created or inspired by ‘Nederlanders’ who have made New Zealand their home.
Te Taitoa Maori o Te Awahou

The Te Taitoa Maori o te Awahou Arts and Crafts Centre will display local taonga and other treasures, crafted by artists from the region. There will be a strong emphasis on weaving - both traditional and modern.
Whare Manaaki
This interactive centre provides activities and displays of traditional and modern Maori craft and art forms, like carving and weaving. Join in and give it a try!
Flax Stripper Museum
Foxton’s wealth was built on the flax industry. Originally the town hosted some 35 flax mills in its vicinity. This museum runs one of the very few flax stripper machines that are left in the world. It's an impressive sight to see that great ancient machine working! The flax is still used for furniture making, Maori crafts etc.
Tramway Café

Have a coffee and a scone, or come and enjoy lunch or your afternoon tea. While you are there, don’t forget to check out the Maori Batallion historic overview. You can sit outside in the sun and watch the blades of De Molen turn, and the world go by.
De Molen

A working replica of a traditional 17th century Dutch windmill, some 30 meters high, featuring technology from before the industrial age. De Molen is fully operational and produces flour. Join one of the guided tours.
